Chest pain can be urgent
Get emergency help for sudden chest pain or pressure that persists, spreads to an arm, jaw or back, or occurs with sweating, breathlessness, nausea or faintness. Heart problems can feel like indigestion. Do not assume that new or concerning chest pain is reflux.
Swallowing problems and bleeding
Arrange prompt assessment for painful swallowing, food sticking, persistent vomiting or unexplained weight loss. Vomiting blood or material resembling coffee grounds, or passing black, tarry stool, needs urgent medical care. These features can signal bleeding or a complication that requires evaluation beyond routine reflux treatment. If food is stuck and you cannot swallow saliva or liquids, go to emergency care now.
Review symptoms that keep returning
Book a review if heartburn occurs most days, disrupts sleep or continues despite the agreed treatment. Bring a list of medicines and note when symptoms happen. Your clinician can check the diagnosis, how treatment is being used and whether further tests or longer-term care are appropriate.
